Reply with quote | #1 | I'm interested in experience with using a 3rd party vendor (not your printer) for image color work and cloning/silo/Photoshop work and final file prep. We do all page layout and design in-house (not looking to change this) and currently have our printer do all the image work and swap out our lo-res images with hi-res once we send them page files. What experience do you have: 1. Doing this kind of work in-house? 2. Sending it to a service bureau/vendor? 3. Having your printer do this?
Do you have any recommendations for a service bureau/vendor? Thanks. Mary-Nell

Reply with quote | #2 | Mary-Nell,
We have done this work in-house for about 10 years since leaving the pre-press shop we had been with for many years previously. We had also used our printer for a modest amount of work from time to time.
The advantages to in-house pre-press are that it is cheaper, but almost as important, it allows for an extraordinarily responsive and highly integrated workflow right up to going on press with digital files.
It has allowed us to reduce creative cycle time-lines, make last minute changes as necessary to accommodate merchandising issues, and has led to a highly collaborative process between pre-press, photography and photo art direction. Many companies do not appreciate the importance of integrating the digital photography workflow (and specifications) with their pre-press areas. Today, this is a critical aspect to optimizing the overall process.
In terms of quality and dependability, we were never disappointed by our outside provider or our printer. This is just an area where outsourcing creates cost and limitations.
Hope you find this helpful.
PS Please say 'hi' to Jim Feinson for me.
