We are redesigning our website targeting 1024px monitors and are currently considering either 960px or 990px as the width for the actual website.

Has anyone done any research, benchmarking, or have an educated opinion on what is the best website width when designing for 1024px monitor resolution?

Hello Chuck:

As you probably know, the size you select is arbitrary.  That being said, we'd go with 960 width to allow for extra room for brower sidebars.

Hope this helps.

Hi Chuck,

Key elements in your design need to be visible above the fold so users can see it without having to scroll.  This includes elements such as site search, email sign-up, catalog request, and product categorization. In addition, you need to allow plenty of room to ensure that text is easy to read in various columns. This is especially important given that the allocated width may vary. The overall design needs to allow the functional elements on individual pages to align correctly.
